Mudslide Along State Route 410 Narrowly Misses Homes

NACHES, Wash. -- The powerful thunderstorm that rolled through the Naches area last week caused multiple mudslides including one that came a little bit too close for comfort for one neighborhood.

Highway 410 is back open this week after mudslides closed it over the weekend but one nearby neighborhood will be feeling the effects from those mudslides for quite some time.

"I was scared," Janet Ahrens said. "It was really frightening."

Janet watched from her window as a wall of mud, rock and dirt pushed toward her back porch. Now they have a large mess on their hands.

"'I've got about five to eight feet of mud rock and stuff that I've got to get cleaned out," George Ahrens said. "And my pond is so full of mud and debris now that what used to be eight, ten feet at some points is only a foot deep now."

But the Ahrens are looking on the bright side.

"The blessing for us is that I've got this nice two foot mound of dirt that I can reseed and make all even," George said. "I just feel lucky about it."
