KENNEWICK, Wash. -

Garret Hughson stopped 37 shots in 38 opportunities, including 14 in the third period, to lift the Spokane Chiefs to a 4-1 win over the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night.  The game was the seventh and final of the pre-season for the Chiefs as they evened their record at 3-3-0-1.

The game's first 20-minutes went scoreless as Tri-City outshot Spokane 11-3.

Eighteen-year-old rookie Blair Oneschuk began the scoring for Spokane with his first of the pre-season 1:13 into the second period.  Keanu Yamamoto and Adam Helewka assisted. Tri-City tied it up at 5:28 with a power play goal from Mitch Topping.

Matt Sozanski, a 17-year-old rookie defenseman, scored his second of the pre-season at 14:38 to give Spokane a 2-1 lead after the second.  Sozanski finished the pre-season with two goals and three assists in five games.

Veterans Jason Fram, at 8:29, and Liam Stewart, at 14:49, pushed the Chiefs lead to 4-1 in the third period.

Troy Trombley made 25 saves on 29 shots for the Americans.

Spokane finished the night 10-11 on the power play and 0-5 on the power play.

In four pre-season games the 18-year-old Hughson finished with a 1.61 goals against average and .944 save percentage.  Hughson is entering his second season in Spokane after winning 11 games with a pair of shutouts as a rookie last season.

The Chiefs and Americans will begin the regular season on Saturday, September 21st in Kennewick.  Spokane will open up at home, also against Tri-City, one week later on Bud Light Opening Night on Saturday, September 28th.
