Sacajawea could be Temporary Home for Marcus Whitman Kids

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. The Richland School board hopes to convince city hall to let it run two schools on the same property.

Instead of demolishing Sacajawea Elementary School when the new Sacajawea is finished, the school board wants to keep the old school open. This way, the kids from Marcus Whitman Elementary can go there while workers finish renovating their school.

Here's the problem. With the projected school attendance, city code would require the two schools operate on 20 acres. The Sacajewea property has 16 acres.

But Richland Schools Superintendent Dr. Rick Schulte says he believes they could work around any potential problems.

"Bus congestion, traffic congestion, and that sort of thing could be an issue,' Schulte says, "but that can be solved by staggering start times so everybody's not coming and going at the same time."

Dr. Shulte points to the old Fruitland school in Kennewick, which is currently the temporary home for students at Lincoln Elementary.

The school board hopes to get city approval in the next few weeks.
