Federal Government Indicts 42 in Yakama Nation Casino Case

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. - Forty-two people were indicted on federal charges Tuesday for conspiring with an Indians Legend Casino employee to scam prize drawings earlier in the year.

It would be a lot easier to gamble if you knew you would win. That's what 42 associates of marketing employee Juan Reyes Correa did at the Legends Casino in Toppenish. The scam targeted a game where cards with names of casino customers were pulled at random. The owner of the winning card would then choose a number on a board with prizes ranging from $250 to $2,500. The casino says their top priority is customer protection.

"We're demonstrating to the general public that we take this very seriously and that we're going to deal with this kind of scam up front," Tribal Council Chairman Harry Smiskin said. "Not only criminally but also administratively if need be."

Not only was the card pulling allegedly rigged with pre-selected winners but the winners often knew where the large prize numbers were on the board as well, according to investigators.

No other Legends Casino employees are named in the case although the indictment alleges that Correa shared some of the winnings with co-workers.
