YAKIMA, Wash.-- Tuesday night, the Yakima City Council will vote to approve a contract for improvements on North First Street.

The contract will allow an architecture firm to make a design and construction plan for the section of North First Street between Interstate 82 and East N Street.

The contract would give the firm more than $37,000 to create the plan.

City officials said once complete, the new look will be unique for people who work and live in the area.

"It would be very distinct from downtown.  It would create it's own atmosphere on north first street, but along the same lines of the downtown effort that's been made over the last decade," said Yakima Communication Director, Randy Beehler.

Once the plan is finished construction can begin using money from a $2.7 million state grant.

Officials said they expect to start the landscape and construction process by early spring.

The project is part of a six-year transportation improvement plan throughout the city.
