Washington Navy Yard Opens; Workers Uneasy

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some of the Washington Navy Yard employees returning to work this morning say it's too soon for them to even talk about Monday's shootings that killed 12 people. Others say it will take a while to get past the tragedy.

The installation re-opened this morning at 6 a.m. One woman admitted that she'd "rather not be here today."

Navy spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Flaherty said today will be a regular work day, except for Building 197, where the shootings occurred, and the base gym. She says the gym is being used as a staging area for the FBI to investigate Monday's rampage in which former Navy reservist Aaron Alexis gunned down 12 people before being killed by police.

What's a total solar eclipse and why this one is so unusual

    Friday, August 18 2017 5:45 PM EDT2017-08-18 21:45:13 GMT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Total solar eclipses occur every year or two or three, often in the middle of nowhere like the South Pacific or Antarctic. What makes Monday's eclipse so special is that it will cut diagonally across the entire United States. The path of totality - where day briefly becomes night - will pass over Oregon, continuing through the heartland all the way to Charleston, South Carolina.
