Washington Navy Yard Opens; Workers Uneasy

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some of the Washington Navy Yard employees returning to work this morning say it's too soon for them to even talk about Monday's shootings that killed 12 people. Others say it will take a while to get past the tragedy.

The installation re-opened this morning at 6 a.m. One woman admitted that she'd "rather not be here today."

Navy spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Flaherty said today will be a regular work day, except for Building 197, where the shootings occurred, and the base gym. She says the gym is being used as a staging area for the FBI to investigate Monday's rampage in which former Navy reservist Aaron Alexis gunned down 12 people before being killed by police.
