Holmberg Leads Chiefs To 6-2 Win At Tri-City

KENNEWICK, Wash. -

Mitch Holmberg's 4 point night led the Spokane Chiefs to a season opening 6-2 win over the Tri City Americans Saturday night in Kennewick. Holmberg notched his 4th hat trick over the last 2 seasons, as the Chiefs won for the second straight year in Tri Cities to open a campaign. Mike Aviani, Liam Stewart, and Connor Chartier notched a goal and an assist apiece.

Chartier started the scoring with a rebound 5:30 minutes into the game to make it 1-0 Spokane. Colton Bobyk picked up his first WHL point with an assist and Stewart also assisted on the goal. Holmberg tallied his first of the night at 6:57 on the Chiefs first power play of the night from Adam Helewka to put Spokane up 2-0. Holmberg then made it 3-0 from Aviani and Reid Gow at 9:55. Stewart then capped a 4 goal first for the Chiefs from Chartier and Adam Hascic, who got his first WHL point, at 11:19 to make it 4-0 Spokane.

Beau McCue and Taylor Vickerman scored goals to bring Tri City within 4-2. Aviani would put the Chiefs back up 5-2 with a power play goal at 18:01 of the second period from Gow and Holmberg. Holmberg then capped a hat trick night with just 4 seconds left in the period from Jason Fram and Helewka to cap the scoring. Eric Williams turned away 22 shots in the victory.

Spokane outshot Tri City 37-24, while going 2-5 on the power play and 6-7 on the penalty kill. The Chiefs will continue their road trip with 2 games at Victoria, B.C. when they face the Royals Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Mike Boyle will have the call on 1510 KGA beginning with the pre-game shows at 6:30pm and the puck drop at 7pm.
