Beautiful Photos From Mt. Spokane As Well As What You Can Expect That's New This Year

Posted: Updated:
KHQ.COM - Now that fall is in full swing, the big question remains: When will the first snowfall hit? While some of us choose to hibernate in our homes when snow is on the ground, we know there are plenty of snow bunnies out there eager for that first dusting of snow on the areas surrounding mountains.

Here are some beautiful pictures from Mt. Spokane as well as what you can expect that's new for this year:
  • Mt. Spokane has once again been voted the BEST Place to Ski & Ride by the readers of the Pacific Northwest Inlander.
  • New for this year, significant improvements to the Main Lodge feature brand-new restroom facilities on the main level, exterior staircases have been enclosed, and new siding added to the building.
  • A new webcam is being installed at the Main Lodge which will display accurate 24-hour snowfall.  Guests can access the webcam at www.mtspokane.com and visually confirm the snowfall posted on the Snow Report.
  • The Backside Terrain Expansion Plan is still in progress.  Groundbreaking could commence this winter or spring on a new chairlift and 7 new runs on the backside of the mountain.

On Tuesday, October 1st, Mt. Spokane received it's first snowfall for the year! At 3:45pm it was snowing heavily at the summit and raining just as hard at the base. You can actually monitor conditions on the webcams as long as it's light here: http://www.mtspokane.com/webcams

An interesting note:  Ski areas actually need a TON of rainfall before the snow falls.  The rain must saturate the ground before freezing, then freeze and solidify all the trees' roots into the ground.  This helps stabilize the vegetation for the harsh winter conditions, including all the weight the trees carry in snow & ice.  There's some ski area trivia you all!

SPOKANE, Wash.- On Monday afternoon a brush fire broke out on the west side of Spokane's South Hill. The fire, which broke out around 3pm, was burning on the hill between High Drive and Qualchan Golf Course. By 9pm Monday night the fire was 100% contained. This does not necessarily mean the fire is totally out, but that crews are confident it won't spread and will be out soon.More >>
