House Hard-Liners Stand United In Budget Showdown

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Freshman lawmaker Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma is one of the hard-line House Republicans demanding concessions on the president's health care law in exchange for ending the government shutdown.

Mullin is a 36-year-old rancher and plumbing business owner. He insists that the president and Senate Democrats ought to negotiate on an emergency spending bill.

Mullin has an expansive district that stretches from Kansas to Texas. Many people there stand firmly behind Mullin even as they begin to feel the impact of the first government shutdown in 17 years. Mullin's constituents say they want the health care law unraveled.

So Mullin and fellow Republicans are refusing to relent and are now four days into a government shutdown with no end in sight.
