Yakima Group Receives One of Last Grants Before Shutdown

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA. -- Many Federal Grants are now delayed because of the government shutdown
but Rural Community Development Resources in Yakima was able to secure one of the last Federal Grants of the 2013 fiscal year.

The $500,000 grant will be used to create and support 40 jobs for low income Native Americans and Hispanics. The RCDR says they were thrilled to learn about the grant just days before the shutdown.

"We were excited because we were screaming," RCDR President and CEO Luz Gutierrez says. "Because it takes a long time, it's sort of like having a baby you know? You're waiting for it to show and you know it's coming but you're never sure when."

RCDR is accepting applications for loans now and small businesses that employ Hispanics and Native Americans are encouraged to apply.

WASHINGTON: It's barely pumpkin latte season and already signs are up advertising *flu* shots! One vaccine that's been off the market for a couple years is back this year. Two years ago the nasal spray vaccine was taken off the market because the Center for Disease Control said it was no longer effective for that particular flu season. For those who tend to get a little needle frantic, the CDC now says this year's nasal spray vaccine should be effective for this year's flu strain. I...More >>
