Inslee Says Federal Shutdown Hurting Washington State

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE (AP) - Washington Gov. Jay Inslee says the impacts from a partial federal government shutdown are already being felt across the state of Washington.

The Democrat blamed House Republicans and told a news conference Sunday the problems could be easily fixed if Speaker John Boehner would bring a clean budget bill up for a vote.

Inslee worries that the continued shutdown is slowing Washington state's aerospace industry, hurting veterans' programs and affecting other services such as unemployment compensation that depend on federal money to operate.

The governor was joined in Seattle by a business owner and several who work with veterans. They worried about how long the shutdown would last and about the stress it has created for veterans and others.

Inslee says Washington is using state money to continue services in the near term, but he worried about how long the state could do that.
