The Port of Kennewick is taking all the steps to officially close down Vista Field.
KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The Port of Kennewick is taking all the steps to officially close down Vista Field.
The community spoke up this spring to redevelop Vista Field and the port is now taking action.
The port reviewed at documents at Tuesday's meeting that included payments and notifications the port needs to make before the airport's official closure in December. The port is on track to get these things done so the airport can meet the closure date of December 31st.
Now that the airport is shutting down, the port will need to pay back about $239,000 of grant money from the Department of Transportation. The port is also working with the FAA to follow all closure requirements.
"Minor details that are all coming together very satisfactory right now that have to be in place before we can officially close Vista Field. We're dealing with those things right now. Once that's done then we can open it up to a citizen advisory committee," said Skip Novakovich Port of Kennewick Commissioner.
The port will ask for the public's input to share their vision of what Vista Field's redevelopment should look like.
