Zwerger Nets Two As Chiefs Drop Rockets 6-3

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Dominic Zwerger chose a good night to hold a coming out party, as the rookie left wing scored his first two career WHL goals, helping the Chiefs (6-1-0-0) hand the Kelowna Rockets (5-1-0-1) their first regulation loss of the year, 6-3, at Spokane Arena in front of 3,522 fans.

The Chiefs scored the first three goals of the game in the 1st Period, added two in the 2nd and finished with an empty netter in the 3rd to reach their final tally. Kelowna scored a one goal in each of the three periods, never narrowing the gap under two goals after Zwerger's first goal at the 9:58 mark of the 1st made it 2-0 Spokane.

Mitch Holmberg, the WHL leader in goals, assists and points, continued his torrid streak. The veteran right wing added two goals and an assist in the Chiefs victory. Through seven games, Holmberg has 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points. He's the first player in the WHL to reach 20 points this season.

Mike Aviani continued to pile up impressive numbers as the center collected two more goals on the night, putting his season total at seven. Aviani is second on the team in goals scored, three behind Holmberg.

Spokane was 0-2 on the power play and 3-5 on the penalty kill. Goaltender Eric Williams, the feature of the TicketsWest Player Magnet received by 1000 fans at the game, stopped 34 of 37 shots sent his way, allowing all three Kelowna goals.

The Spokane Chiefs will head to Alberta for three games this weekend, facing Edmonton on Friday, Red Deer on Saturday and Calgary on Sunday. The Chiefs will return home next Wednesday, October 16, against the Swift Current Broncos for a 7:05 game at Spokane Arena.

Tickets for all Chiefs games are available via the Chiefs Ticket Office at (509) 535-PUCK, at all TicketsWest outlets and online at www.ticketswest.com.
