Detective In NYC Motorcycle-SUV Melee Posts Bail

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - An undercover police detective charged with gang assault in a motorcycle rally that descended into violence in New York City has been released on bail.

Wojciech Braszczok (VOY'-chehk BROOSH'-chahk) appeared in court Wednesday and was charged with gang assault. He left a Manhattan courthouse without speaking to reporters.

He posted $150,000 bond.

His attorney, John Arlia, says a video shows Braszczok was at least 12 feet away when an SUV driver was attacked.

The prosecution says the video shows Braszczok shattering the SUV's rear window, then kicking the passenger side while a 2-year-old sat in the back Sept. 29.

The defense says there already was a hole in the vehicle's back window.

Sherry Hegstad loves to cut hair. She’s had her cosmetology license since 2014 and it makes her feel alive, gives her a sense of passion, a passion that she says wouldn’t be possible today. “I was addicted to meth for 22 years,” she said. Hegstad was headed for rock bottom, “I was at Walmart on the day before Black Friday shoplifting and I had meth on me." And in 2015, her life would change.
