RICHLAND, WA. --  Young girls are running towards a healthier future with one local program.

It's called Girls on the Run and more than 20 girls between 3rd and 5th grade participate in the after-school program at Jefferson Elementary in Richland.

Other than teaching them running and fitness skills, the girls also learn about character development and talk about topics like bullying, values and teamwork.

"The program is designed for girls of that age to give them some tools to help them navigate through teenage years when they need all the self esteem they can get," said Girls on the Run Coach Sarah McMenamin.

The girls are preparing to complete a 5k run at the end of November. There are over 200 girls participating in Girls on the Run in southeast Washington.
