RICHLAND, WA-- Richland's Sacajawea Elementary School is now a Washington State 2013 School of Distinction.

Sacajawea Elementary earned the 2013 School of Distinction title as one of 99 schools statewide that represent the top five percent of schools whose student show outstanding learning growth. This is the first time Sacajawea Elementary has earned the award.

The distinction is based on the last five years of a school's performance. Sacajawea's principal says it's a group effort to be able to achieve such a major accomplishment.

"Everyone plays a role in the education of a child. It also shows that the children are working hard as well and their parents are supporting this effort at home," said Jim Bruce, Sacajawea Elementary principal.

Several state teaching organizations come together to name the schools of distinction. Fifty-five elementary schools, 24 middle schools and 23 high schools across the state received the honor.

Two schools in Pasco, three schools in Yakima County and two schools in Kittitas County also received the distinction award.
