PASCO, WA-- The Columbia Basin College Foundation reached a record high this year by awarding $830,000 in scholarships.

The CBC Foundation just keeps growing. More donors are giving and more students are applying for the scholarships.

There were many people to applaud at Friday's Columbia Basin College Foundation scholarship reception. Four hundred sixteen student recipients, their families and the donors who made it all possible.

"A lot of students would not be able to attend school without support of a scholarship. We hear that everyday," said Debbie Risk, CBC Foundation director of operations.

"Receiving the foundation scholarship has taken a big relief off my shoulders and my family's. It's a definite honor," said Taylor Brown, scholarship recipient.

The $830,000 awarded this year tops last year's $560,000. Risk says every year more students apply and more donors participate.

"It tugs at their heart strings and that's why they continue to give every year is because they get to come to a reception like this. They get to meet their students and they get to make an impact in their community with those students," Risk said.

She expects to see continued growth in the foundation that started with just five scholarships in 1985.

She says Friday's event is about more than the foundation and its participants, it's about the community that supports local education.

"It's just wonderful to be able to walk into a room of 500 to 600 people that really tells me what a community can do when they get together," Risk said.

One in every two students that applies for a scholarship at CBC receives one. The greater awareness about the scholarships available to students is increasing the applicant pool and helping more students graduate.
