Ellensburg Officer Involved in Knife Attack

Posted: Updated:

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - An Ellensburg police officer fights off a man with a knife. It happened around 2 a.m. Saturday morning in the 1600 block of Brook Court in Ellensburg.

While police were looking into other incidents in that area, 28-year-old Jack Hughes of Shelton, Washington confronted Officer Drew Houck with a knife. During a struggle, Officer Houck was hurt but with non life-threatening injuries. He got the knife away from Hughes and arrested him.

"Officer Houck would have been justified in using deadly force in this confrontation. Recent events in our community make it all too clear how deadly knife attacks can be. Officer Houck is a veteran officer of the Ellensburg Police Department and we are extremely proud of the courage and fortitude he displayed," said Chief Dale Miller.

Hughes was booked into the Kittitas County Correction Center on assault charges. He'll also likely be charged with the other incidents reported in that area.
