Screeching In The Fireplace: Owl Trapped & Rescued In Kennewick

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - When a Kennewick woman went to light the first fire of the season in her fireplace, she encountered a little screeching friend...

A screech owl had been trapped in her chimney for a couple days. She believes he chewed through the screening of her chimney and came into her fireplace. To keep him safe she closed the damper and kept him in the fireplace until volunteers came today from Blue Mountain Wildlife. This time of year the owls are seeking warm shelter. This is the third one they have rescued in the past couple weeks in our area.

"A great thing to do right now is to put the spark arrestor or make sure that your screen is on top of your chimney because it seems like these little owls are maybe seeking a warm place in a dark cavity area which is their natural type of habitat."

The little owl went on his way to Pendleton, Oregon this morning to be rehydrated, fed and inspected by the people of Blue Mountain Wildlife before he is released back into the wild here in the Tri-Cities. The group is mostly volunteer based and run their services off of donations. If you would like to support their animal rescue efforts go to
