Bob Costas Weighs In On Washington Redskins Name Debate

Posted: Updated:
The debate of the Washington Redskins changing their name has been lingering for quite some time, however, it seems to be reaching a boiling point.

Protests by Native Americans outside the Redskins' stadium have been happening more frequently and have been growing in size. However, Dan Snyder, the owner of the Redskins, says the name is meant to honor Native Americans, and has implied that he will not be changing the name. In fact, he has basically said that despite the protests, he'll never change the name. Snyder says there is too much history and tradition associated with the Redskins.

In many polls, most Native Americans say they are not offended by the name. Still, the issue has been gaining traction. Last week President Obama even weighed in on the topic, saying if he owned the Redskins, he would think about changing it. And Sunday night on NBC's Sunday Night Football, much like last December after a school shooting in Newtown and a murder-suicide committed by an NFL player, commentator Bob Costas offered his opinion to America.

During halftime, Costas said, "Redskins' can't possibly honor a heritage, or a noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term. It's an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present-day intent."

Many sports teams with Native American mascots have changed their name already. North Dakota University used to be call The Fighting Sioux, however they are now without a mascot after deciding to drop the name. The Stanford Cardinal also used to be the Stanford Indians.

In Cleveland, many consider the cartoon-ish "Chief Wahoo", the mascot of the Cleveland Indians, to be offensive and there has been talk about changing the name or logo.

We want to know what you think. Do you think the Washington Redskins should change their name? Vote in our poll listed at the top of this article. And tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
