YAKIMA, WA -- After four boys broke through the ice in February and nearly drowned, several new signs are updated around Kiwanis Pond in Yakima.
The city said they're increasing awareness about some of the dangers, and the new signs are more visible. They hope the signs encourage kids to stay away from the water.
"The greatest danger is that they're not designed for swimming in nor going out on the ice obviously, and we just want to make people as aware as we can of that danger that exists around those ponds," said Randy Beehler, the Communications and Public Affairs Director for the City of Yakima.
The city is also starting a public education campaign. They've created PSA's called "Sink or Swim" and will run them again during the winter, warning about the dangers of thin ice.
