UPDATE: Wiring Theft Causes Phone Service Outage in Yakima County

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: Service has been restored the 300 customers in Gleed.

NACHES, WA.--It wasn't a very pleasant surprise to wake up to Thursday morning. Around 2,500 people in the Gleed, Naches and Chinook Pass areas were without phone or Internet service for a while, and it's all because of copper theft.

Yakima County Sheriff's Deputies are looking for whoever stole 1,000 feet of fiber and copper cables. Deputies said they were taken from the area of South Naches Heights Road and Powerhouse.

Now, CenturyLink said all 9-1-1 services and Internet has been restored, but about 300 customers in Gleed still don't have telephone service.

The Naches School District said their main phone lines were down Thursday.

"They can communicate via email to teachers and the school building itself, and also to know that in terms of emergencies or safety precautions, we will be communicating with them through our cell phones," said Rich Rouleau, the Principal of Naches Valley High School.

"Tried to make phone calls to Frontier, which is my carrier and could not get through so I knew there was a problem," said Butch Smith.

CenturyLink said crews are on site and working around the clock to get service fully restored.

GLEED, WA - The Yakima County Sheriff's Office says several people in Yakima County won't have phone service for the next few days.

CenturyLink says customers who live in Gleed, Tieton, Cowiche, Naches and up to White Pass, aren't able to make phone calls, including calls to 911, or use the Internet.

Deputies say cell phone service in the area may also be affected.

CenturyLink isn't sure when phone service will be restored, but deputies say they estimate the outage will last at least two days.

If you live in the affected area and need emergency services, deputies say go to your local fire station.

Sheriff deputies say someone stole more than 1,000 feet of fiber optic cable and copper wire early Thursday morning near South Naches Road and Powerhouse Road. CenturyLink says the cable and wiring is worth about $30,000.

If you have any information about the wire theft, please contact the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
