Fatal Traffic Crash - Interstate 84 West of Hood River

Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of an early Thursday morning fatal traffic crash along the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 about seven miles west of Hood River. The crash resulted in the death of a male and critical injury to a second vehicle occupant. Their names are withheld at this time and may not be released until Friday.

Preliminary information indicates on October 17, 2013 at approximately 3:36 a.m., a 2007 Honda Civic two-door driven by an 18-year old male was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 55. A witness reported the car nearly rear-ended a commercial truck and trailer when the driver lost control and the car slid across the lanes into the Wyeth Weigh Station truck scales and crashed into the back of a parked semi-trailer.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints.

The male passenger, not using safety restraints, was critically injured and transported by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. Identification of the injured passenger is pending confirmation.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Hood River County Sheriff's Office, local fire and medical responders, and ODOT.
