Two-Vehicle Collision in Yakima, Baby Ejected From Van, Father Runs Away

YAKIMA, WA. -- NBC Right Now is learning more about a serious accident in Yakima that sent a baby to the hospital with serious head injuries.

Witnesses say the man driving the car, who ran away from the accident was the father of the baby and he didn't have a drivers license. The father was driving his family in a Ford Winstar Van when they were hit by a Chevrolet Tahoe at the intersection of 6th Ave and Hallaway Street.

The Tahoe sent the van into a metal pole and a baby, who was being fed at the time, went through a window and onto the sidewalk. Her father took off on foot.

Workers at Northwest Auto Body on that corner say they see accidents all the time and something needs to be done.

"This is the worst one that I've seen," Ken Phillips said. "I've seen worse wrecks but nothing like this though. There wasn't that much damage or anything but just the baby... What happened... It's terrible."

The four-month-old girl was air-lifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a serious head injury. No one else was injured in the accident.

The father was eventually caught and arrested. He faces charges of vehicular assault and hit and run.
