YAKIMA, WA.-- The completion of a major road project is bringing some big smiles in Yakima.

The city said River Road is vital to Yakima's economy, and a joint public-private partnership helped pay for the $1.4 million project. Funding came from Washington Fruit, the Yakima School District, the Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board and the city.

New sidewalk and lighting has been installed between 6th Avenue and 16th Avenue on River Road. The principal of Stanton Academy said new infrastructure and the widening of the roadway will make it safer for high school students.

"Now with the road being wider, if a bus is stopped it's not going to halt traffic," said Clinton Endicott, the Principal of Stanton Academy. "It's going to allow Washington Fruit and Produce to continue to do their business. So it just worked out really well for everyone."

Stanton Academy has nearly 400 students. Also, Washington Fruit has more than 100 trucks that use that stretch of roadway daily.

The city said this project ensures that River Road remains a major commercial and industrial area for many years to come.
