YAKIMA, WA-- A new addition to the Yakima Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant will save the city thousands of dollars.

Thursday morning the plant held a ribbon cutting ceremony to show off the new bioreactor that will clean wastewater coming from fruit production companies.

The new bioreactor cost about $7 million to complete, paid for primarily by a public works trust fund from the state.

The city said this is great for more than just the treatment plant.

"It's producing jobs.  Not only will fruit processors use this facility, but hopefully future breweries, wineries and cider press operations. That means more jobs," Said City Manager Tony O'Rourke.

This all started after a lawsuit a few years ago and odor complaints, which forced the plant to stop wastewater processing in a nearby field.

The city said the new plant will save about $10,000 per month and reduce energy costs.
