ND Regulators To Publish Info On Oil Spills

Posted: Updated:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota officials say they're setting up a website to publish information on all oil spills reported to the state.

Friday's announcement comes after the state was criticized for a delayed announcement of a major oil spill in northwestern North Dakota earlier this month. Some 20,000 barrels fouled a farmer's wheat field, but it wasn't publicly reported for 11 days.

The state's move also comes after an Associated Press story published Friday that reviewed documents and found nearly 300 pipeline spills haven't been publicly announced in the past two years, though many were small.

Dave Glatt, state environmental health chief, says officials are still considering how big a spill merits an announcement in addition to being published on the website.
