Hermiston Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Wife's Death

Posted: Updated:

PENDLETON, OR - A Hermiston man who killed his wife three years ago has pleaded guilty to 1st Degree Manslaughter and will spend 20 years in prison.

Maurilio Lamas Sanchez, 48, accepted a plea deal after initially facing a murder charge.  The punishment handed down Monday is twice the mandatory minimum.

Judge Christopher Brauer said it was because of the crime's aggravating circumstance of "deliberate cruelty."

Sanchez has been in jail since his wife, Hilaria Sanchez, was found dead in their mobile home in October 2010.

Police say Sanchez smashed a wine bottle over his wife's head, stabbed her in the chest and used a bandanna to choke her.

The couple had been married for about 20 years and had seven children together.
