Trial Set for Pendleton Man Accused of Murder

Posted: Updated:

BEND, OR - A Deschutes County Judge has set a trial date for a man from Pendleton accused of killing an elderly woman.

30-year-old Joshua Jokinen's murder trial is set to begin July 8th, 2014. Police say he killed 78-year-old horse breeder, Carolyn Burdick this summer.

Jokinen was on supervision for an earlier criminal offense when officers say he hit the woman in the head with the back of a shovel.

The death occurred in a rural area east of Sisters where horse farms are common. Burdick bred Arabian horses and owned the company, Masterpiece Arabians.

Deschutes County Sheriff Deputies say they found Burdick's body at her home near Cloverdale shortly after Jokinen called 911 and said he may have killed a woman.

Sheriff Larry Blanton called the woman's death "a strange, senseless act."
