KFD Delivers Free Coats to First Graders at Eastgate Elementary in Kennewick

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - First graders at Eastgate Elementary School in Kennewick got a nice surprise Wednesday morning from local firefighters.

Kennewick firefighters handed free coats to almost 100 students, as part of their Coats for Kids Drive. Firefighters say they chose Eastgate because the school has the highest number of students in the district receiving free or reduced lunch.

Referencing his coat, George Talley, a first grader at the school said, "It's awesome and I've been waiting to have this my entire life."

"I like the inside because it's fluffy and I like the outside because it's pink," said Piper Judd, also a first grader at the school, as she described her new coat.

Students also got to meet the firefighters and got an up-close look inside their trucks.

Firefighters say they plan to make this an annual event; the goal is to provide multiple classes with coats next year.
