Former Gonzaga University men's basketball player Rich Evans passed away Oct. 9 in Salina, Kansas.

Evans played for the Bulldogs from 1947-50 and still ranks 13th on the all-time Gonzaga scoring list with 1,507 points. He held the top spot on the scoring chart from 1950 until 1955 when Jerry Vermillion finished his career with 1,547 points.

Born in Kingman, Kansas, in 1928, Evans was a member of Gonzaga's inaugural post-season team, the Bulldogs advancing to the NAIA National Championship in 1948 and going 1-1.

Evans graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Salina. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and had a 24-year career as a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salina and Elks Lodge No. 718.

Survivors include his wife Eileen, a daughter Erin Evans in Lake Oswego, Ore., and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held in All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Salina.
