YPD Bike Patrol Comes to an End

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA-- Police will not be doing bike patrols during First Friday along Yakima Avenue anymore.

Police said because of low funds, the program was only set up to run during the summer when more people were in the downtown area at night.

Some of the officers who rode the bikes work on school campuses, so once school started there was not enough people and money to continue the program into the fall.

Police said the goal was to have a bigger visual presence in the area.

"It was just a very high presence of police, which the intent of that was to make people feel comfortable, and feel safe that they can come downtown, go to the restaurants, go to the different venues, and see these officers in the area," said Captain Rod Light.

Police said if the city approves a new budget for the department, they might bring the patrol back in the spring and continue it into the summer again.

Police will be out in patrol cars for First Friday.
