The highly contested I-522 race is not passing as of Tuesday night.
By a close margin, "No" is coming in at 55% and Yes at 45%.
The promoters of Initiative 522 say it is a simple proposal to require the labeling of genetically engineered foods, or GMOs.
They say shoppers have a right to know if the food they eat contains genetically engineered food or not.
The Vote No campaign says I-522 would mandate special food labeling regulations in Washington that don't exist in any other state.
They also say I-522 would create more state bureaucracy, impose new costs and burdens on local farmers and businesses.
