As Tuesday's election night drew to a close the well-publicized city council races in Spokane were decided, but some in Spokane Valley were too close to call.

The fight for Spokane city council seats may go down as one of the most expensive in city history, with well over a quarter million dollars raised in two contested races.

In the end, Jon Snyder won re-election with 64% of the vote to John Ahern's 36%.

"I'm just thrilled, I feel really fortunate that the citizens of Spokane have sent me back for four more years," Snyder told KHQ's Kelsey Watts at his watch party Tuesday evening. "Now we have some work to do and I'm ready to get to it."

However, Ahern told KHQ despite the overwhelming numbers, he won't consider the race over until every ballot is counted, and also said "the unions bought this election and the unions are going to get what they want," referring to the amount of money raised to support both Snyder and Mumm's campaigns.

Spokane city council candidate Candace Mumm also won her seat with 55% of the vote while Michael Cannon received 45%.

"We always thought that a neighborhood candidate should win and I grew up here on the north side and worked in the neighborhoods for over two decades, and boy, they sure supported me all the way through," Candace Mumm told KHQ's Kelsey Watts. "It's just so thrilling to have this opportunity."

Mumm's opponent, Michael Cannon, told KHQ despite the loss, he plans to stay involved with the city and wouldn't rule out a future bid for office.

Amber Waldref was one of the few candidates who did not have butterflies Tuesday evening waiting on results to come in; she ran unopposed for re-election to her Spokane city council seat with 100% of the vote.

"It's actually nice to not be sitting on pins and needles, but it's not any less exciting [to run unopposed]," Waldref told KHQ's Kelsey Watts. "I'm just so thrilled to be re-elected to city council and be able to serve Spokane for another four years."

The results from Spokane Valley's city council races were less conclusive; as of Tuesday evening, two races were too close to call:

Rod Higgins had 51% of the vote for Spokane Valley's position #1 to Linda Thompson's 49%.

For position #4, both Ed Pace and Gary Schimmels received 50% of the vote.

However, Chuck Hafner clearly won re-election for position #5 with 65% to Don Morgan, Jr's 35%.

Bill Bates won his bid for position #7 with 67% over Fred Beaulac's 33%.

The next round of election results should be released Wednesday evening. To view the full list of results, click here: http://vote.wa.gov/results/current/spokane/
