Whitworth Men Earn NWC Preseason No. 1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Northwest Conference men’s basketball coaches have picked Whitworth as the league favorite for the 2013-14 season, according to the NWC preseason poll released today by the conference office.

The Pirates, who are aiming for an unprecedented fifth straight NWC title, received seven of nine first place votes and 70 points in the poll. Whitman, last season’s NWC runner-up, is second in the poll with two first place votes and 58 points.

Whitworth is coming off of a 26-4 season in 2012-13. The Pirates won their fourth straight Northwest Conference championship with a 14-2 record, earned their seventh straight NWC tournament crown and advanced to the NCAA Division III round of 16 for the fifth time in school history.

Whitworth welcomes back three starters in Dustin McConnell, Taylor Farnsworth and George Valle, along with sixth-man Colton McCargar who is expected to crack the starting lineup this winter. McConnell was a First Team All-NWC last year, while McCargar garnered Second Team honors. Farnsworth received honorable mention consideration.

The Pirates are aiming for an eighth straight trip to the NCAA Division III tournament. They are also striving to become the first school to win five straight Northwest Conference regular season championships.
