Yakima to Discuss Terms of Emergency Winter Homeless Shelters

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA. -- The City Council will discuss the final conditions for emergency homeless shelters this winter in a study session Tuesday.

Three churches in Yakima will be allowed to house a total of 60 people from November to March. The city is allowing them to break fire code but they are required to have wireless smoke detectors in all sleeping areas.

The Yakima Fire Department will also help train volunteers and provide emergency radios in case of a fire. The city hopes to come up with a permanent shelter for the homeless by next winter.
