Typhoon Hits Philippines, Affects People in Tri-Cities

NBCRightNow.com - Thousands are dead after a massive typhoon roared through the Philippines over the weekend but the storm is also affecting a group of people here in the Tri-Cities.

It was a long weekend for Filipino native Myla Din, with no way to reach her brother living in what is said to be one of the hardest hit areas of the Philippines, Tacloban city.

"I was praying a lot the whole weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday," said Din, I tried to contact my family members, my sisters my brothers but they know nothing so I was so helpless," she added.

The rest of Din's family lives in an area that was not hit by the storm, but with phone lines down and no electricity, no one in her family knew if her brother and his family had survived

"I was really really nervous I was praying 'oh lord help my brother and his family,'" explained Din.

It was not until Monday morning that Din's prayers were answered, she got word her brother and his family all survived, but thousands more were not so lucky.

Mayuga Enriqueta grew up in the Philippines, she said it is common to expect storms and natural disasters. She explains that many poor families spend decades building their homes and sometimes that's all they have so when things this happen, they lose everything. Sometimes building back up after these storms takes a lifetime.

"I don't think you need to be a Filipino to understand that what happened, the forces of nature, nobody can really control,"she said.
