SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane County Sheriff's Office is recommending that charges of vehicular homicide be filed for a crash that killed two University High School students last month.

Spokane County prosecutors will decide if 16-year-old Preston Maher will be charged in the case.

Maher has been identified as the driver of a car that crashed into a tree on Oct. 5, killing 16-year-olds Josie Freier and McKenzie Mott.

Maher was treated for injuries and released from a hospital.

The felony charge of vehicular homicide carries a maximum sentence of life in prison for offenders tried as adults.

PREVIOUS STORY:

KHQ.COM - On Friday morning University High School hosted a homecoming assembly to honor two students that were killed in a car crash, Josie Freier and McKenzie Mott. At the beginning of the ceremony, each student brought out a toy and put it on the gym floor. The goal was to bring in so many toys that you can't see the gym floor.

University High students weren't the only ones who donated toys, several other schools in the area also showed up with busses full of toys.

University High's band and choir played and sang a beautiful tribute to honor the victims. It was a very emotional moment for everyone inside of the gym while music filled the airwaves.

The entire girl's soccer team from University High wore Mckenzie's number on t-shirts to honor her at the assembly. McKenzie's number was #9 and it was announced that her jersey will temporarily be retired.

The leadership teacher at University High ended the ceremony telling students the following: "Don't forget to say I love you, don't forget to give that hug and receive that hug, and keep their memories alive."

Toys From Titans was a drive set up to honor Josie and McKenzie. Josie Freier loved working for Toys For Tots, so her family asked that people donate a toy in her honor.
