Chiefs Director Earns Honor Off Of The Ice

by Spokane Chiefs Media Relations

The Spokane Chiefs are proud to announce that Director of Player Personnel Chris Moulton and his wife, Shelley, were recently named Volunteers of the Year at the 2013 Community & Business Excellence Awards in Fernie, British Columbia. The Moultons founded and operated a new charity, Fernie Friends for Friends, dedicated to raising funds for cancer patients and their families living in Fernie.

“We just want to help people that have family members going through cancer treatment,” Chris Moulton told The Free Press. “The families incur so many expenses above and beyond their everyday lives that helping them out, even with the smallest amount financially, is what we want to do.”

Friends for Friends partnered with the Fernie Ghostriders Junior B club to raise money with a silent jersey auction of special pink accented jerseys worn during the month of October. The Ghostriders’ players, in the spirit of the fundraiser, chose to wear the pink jerseys at all games, including on the road. Totals for this year are still being finalized, but the expectation is that the two-year tally will be pushed over $6,000 for the Moultons’ charity, which will redirect the funds to a local family faced with burdensome medical costs.

“Both Chris and Shelley work tirelessly for others, which makes our organization proud to know them,” Barb Anderson, President of the Fernie Ghostriders expressed. “Supporting them was the easiest decision and a small thank you for their thoughtfulness towards others during such tough times!”

Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz added, “The Spokane Chiefs organization is very proud of the work Chris and Shelley do in the Fernie area for cancer patients and their families. Through Shelley's own challenges with cancer, the Moultons have experienced firsthand what these families are going through and how tough the battle is for everyone involved.”

“It is fitting that Chris and Shelley are being recognized for their tireless volunteer efforts for those in need in Fernie.”
