WASHINGTON, Ill. (AP) - The mayor of Washington, Ill., estimates that up to 500 homes in his town were either damaged or destroyed by a wave of fierce storms that brought damaging winds and tornadoes to 12 states yesterday.

Mayor Gary Manier says, "Everybody's without power, but some people are without everything."

At least six people in Illinois were killed and dozens more injured.

Washington resident Curt Zehr says his wife and adult son scrambled into their basement when Zehr spotted a funnel cloud.

Zehr says moments later, the house was gone, but his family was uninjured.

Forecasters say Illinois was the hardest hit. The National Weather Service say up to 40 tornadoes may have hit the Midwest.
