Six Pirates Named To All-NWC 2013 Team: Seven More Earn Honorable Mentions

Six Whitworth University players have been named to the 2013 All-Northwest Conference football team, and seven others received honorable mention consideration. The NWC office released the team early this afternoon.

The 2013 All-NWC team is selected based on voting by league coaches.

Tight end Wade Meyer and offensive lineman Dalton Cosbywere voted to the All-NWC First Team Offense, while strong safety Casey Monahan was named to the First Team defense.

Running back DJ Tripoli and wide receiver Drew Clausenwere chosen on the Second Team offense and Aaron Cochran made the Second Team defense.

Bryan Peterson (QB), Devon Lind (WR), Danny Welstad(DE), Jacob Kriegbaum (DT), Kyle Davidson (DT), Jarrell Norman (CB) and De' Hall (CB) each received honorable mention consideration.

Cosby completed his third season as a starter on the offensive line, his second as the starting left tackle. Meyer caught 36 passes for 562 yards to lead NWC tight ends in both categories. He averaged 15.6 yards per catch and caught one touchdown. Monahan led the NWC in interceptions with seven and led the Pirates with 54 tackles. He also had two fumble recoveries for nine total takeaways.

Tripoli finished the season with 646 rushing yards, averaging 64.6 yards per game and 3.9 yards per carry. He ran for seven touchdowns and caught one more. Clausen was the Pirates' leading receiver this season with 50 catches for 689 yards and he caught three touchdowns. Cochran finished second in the NWC in tackles for loss (12.5 TFLs totaling 43 yards). He had 49 total tackles.

Peterson completed 63.6% of his passes for 1,751 yards with nine touchdowns and only three interceptions. Lind caught 36 of Peterson's passes for 488 yards. He led the Bucs with five touchdown receptions.

Welstad had 29 total tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss. Kriegbaum finished with 40 total tackles and 10 tackles for losses totaling 40 yards. Davidson made 35 tackles, including five for losses of 31 yards. Norman broke up six passes to go along with 39 tackles. Hall picked off four passes, broke up six other passes and made 29 total stops.

Whitworth finished the 2013 season 4-6 overall and 2-4 (fifth place) in the Northwest Conference.

Senior forward Johnathan Williams scored 23 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. As a team the Zags shot above 50 percent from the field as they never trailed in the contest. Up next for Gonzaga is a home contest against North Dakota on Saturday December 16.

    • Gonzaga loses heartbreaker to UNLV 52-50

      Gonzaga Athletics SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs erased an eight-point fourth quarter UNLV lead and led by two late, but fell to UNLV on Saturday afternoon inside the McCarthey Athletic Center, 52-50. The Zags had a out-of-bounds call on the court reversed and had possession up 50-48 with 1:17 remaining, but a turnover at the offensive end led to an eventual layup for UNLV with a foul, and an offensive rebound on the free throw that led to a put-back for the 52-50 lead....

      The Pirates couldn't hold off Carroll College in the Holiday Classic finale, losing 78-56.

    • Whitworth beats Colorado College 65-50 behind Douglas' 26 pts

      Grace Douglas scored 24 of her 26 points in the second half to lead the Whitworth Pirates to a 65-50 win over the Colorado College Tigers. 

    • Eagles cruises to 88-42 victory over Multnomah

      Eastern Washington was led offensively by Delaney Hodgins who had 24 points and Uriah Howard who added a career-high 18.

    • Lady Griz win third straight game, beat Stephen F. Austin 60-52

      The Lady Griz won their third straight game on Thursday as they beat Stephen F. Austin 60-52 in Dahlberg Arena. 

    • Gonzaga wins tight one in Pullman over WSU 64-56

      Zykera Rice took over late with 19 points, 13 in the second half, seven rebounds, and big play after big play as GU took control in the fourth quarter.

    • Vandals roll past Cougars 91-64

      The Battle didn't last very long on Wednesday night in the Cowan Spectrum, with Idaho running away to the 91-64 win over Washington State.
