KENNEWICK, WA - Fifth graders at Eastgate Elementary accepted their diplomas Wednesday morning for completing the D.A.R.E. program.

Nearly 80 students completed the ten week course, which encourages kids to stay away from tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.

Kennewick's Chief of Police Ken Hohenberg was the first D.A.R.E. officer in Kennewick and says he feels fortunate the program is still around even after 25 years.

"It's a big expenditure and commitment on our city council and the city's budget, but we've seen a difference and we continue to hear from parents that it does make a difference in their children's lives," said Hohenberg.

Kennewick's D.A.R.E. program is the longest running of its kind in the Mid-Columbia area.
