Academic All-Star: Nick Martin

The Chiawana football team is unstoppable right now. But ask them whom they admire, and he'll be right there on the sidelines. This week's Academic All-Star, team manager, Nick Martin.
‘School is obviously the first priority, coaches are all right with that, they understand if I'm out here with my schoolwork, they're real supportive of it,' said Martin.
He's kept a 3.8 GPA while managing both the football and basketball teams all through high school, and it's helped him develop personally.
‘I've learned how to better manage my time, be more responsible, been held to high expectations, and it's helped me mature and be ready for life after high school,' said Martin.
Nick is a favorite of head coach Steve Graff, who spotted him early and as been at his side all through high school.
‘Nick's been with us since he was a freshman, he turned out for football as a freshman, decided it wasn't his cup of tea, wanted to be the manager. He was down with the freshman for a while, but we stole him because he does such a great job. He has a lot of responsibility, he gets things out here, all set up for us, (and) we don't have to do any of that stuff. There's no job too big for him, and nothing we don't let him handle,' said Graff
Keeps telling me 'No, you're not going on a mission, you're not going to college, you're going to stay here, you're going to manage!,' said Martin.
The players consider him one of their own, quite the compliment coming from some of the best in the state.
‘This has been my team, I've been with them since freshman year, and I've been to all the practices, all the camps, all the summer activities. I feel like they've accepted me. So because of that, we cry when we lose, we cheer when we win; it's a team thing. I'm there with them in the highs and in the lows,' said Martin.
