Historian reads JFK speech excerpts

DALLAS (AP) - Author and historian David McCullough says John F. Kennedy's words changed lives and history. And he says much of what Kennedy said still applies today.

McCullough read excerpts of some of Kennedy's most well-known speeches Friday during a Dallas ceremony on the day marking 50 years since Kennedy was cut down by an assassin's bullet.

He says Kennedy spoke of things that mattered, including education, service to one's country and the cause of peace on Earth. And he says Kennedy spoke to the point, with confidence and without "stale platitudes."

Obama on JFK anniversary: Few fears for own safety

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says he doesn't spend much time worrying about his own personal safety despite President John F. Kennedy's assassination 50 years ago.

Obama says the tragedy reshaped the Secret Service in many ways. But he says the agency does an outstanding job every day. He says, quote, "It's not something I think about."

Obama spoke in an ABC News interview on the 50th anniversary of Kennedy being gunned down in an open-top limousine in Dallas. ABC released excerpts of the interview being aired Friday evening.

Obama's comments also come as the Secret Service is dealing with a new case of alleged sexual misconduct involving agents assigned to protect the president. The agency had been seeking to repair its reputation following a 2012 prostitution scandal in Colombia.

DALLAS (AP) - The mayor of Dallas has honored John F. Kennedy's life and legacy on the day marking 50 years since his assassination.

Mike Rawlings says the nation grew up on the day Kennedy died and had to live up to the challenges of the words and vision of a beloved president. Rawlings says Dallas has turned "civic heartbreak" into hard work and it is a much different place today.

He called Kennedy an "idealist without illusions who helped build a more just and equal world."

Rawlings' remarks were followed by a moment of silence and a tolling of bells.

Reverent memorials to mark JFK 50th anniversary

Fifty years ago today, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. And America is marking the anniversary with a ceremony in the city's Dealey Plaza, and a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m., when Kennedy was shot.

In Washington, Barack Obama has ordered that flags be lowered at government buildings. Earlier this week Obama visited Kennedy's grave at Arlington National Cemetery.

The JFK Library and Museum in Boston will open a small exhibit of never-before-displayed items from Kennedy's state funeral.

PREVIOUS STORY:

DALLAS (AP) - Fifty years after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, thousands will mark the day with a solemn ceremony in Dealey Plaza.

Friday's city-planned event in the place where JFK's motorcade passed through when shots rang out will feature brief remarks by the mayor, the tolling of church bells and readings from the president's speeches by author David McCullough.

It's a reverential approach that will be mirrored in Boston, where the JFK Library and Museum will open a small exhibit of never-before-displayed items from Kennedy's state funeral and host a musical tribute. In Washington, President Barack Obama will meet privately at the White House with leaders and volunteers from the Peace Corps program, which Kennedy created.

About 5,000 tickets were issued for the free ceremony in Dealey Plaza.
