Posted: Updated:

Case Number: 13-37507
Date and Time of Incident: November 20, 2013
Location of Incident: 200 blk of E 1st Ave

Victim's Name: Juana I. Pinto Duenas;  Age 38

Summary of Incident: Kennewick, Wa.
The Kennewick Police contacted Juana Pinto in reference to a fraud report. Pinto reported that yesterday she received a call from a male who identified himself as her nephew. The male stated that he was traveling to the U.S. to surprise his mother. Today she received another call from the male who stated he had been detained at the border and requested she wire him money so he could continue on. Pinto wired $1883.00 to a Western Union in Mexico. Pinto then received an additional call from the male stating he attempted to bribe an official and was now being arrested and needed additional money. Pinto wired an additional $1008.00 via Western Union. Pinto then called her sister and learned that the male in question was not her nephew.

This is a common fraud technique being used across the nation. The suspects know just enough family information to sound believable. Once the money is sent out of the country, and this case Mexico, there is no more that law enforcement can further investigate. We encourage citizens to verify information to be accurate before sending any money to anyone. In this case, the victim lost nearly $3000 to the thieves.
If someone has information that they would like to provide while remaining confidential, they may call the Crime Stoppers line at 586-TIPS (8477), 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit
