YAKIMA, WA -- Temperatures are dropping across the region and pet owners should keep a few things in mind as we prepare for winter.

Veterinarians said even though animals can be outside during the cold winter months, there are some simple ways to make sure they stay safe and healthy.

They said shelter is the main way to make sure your animal is safe from the harsh elements during winter.

"They need to have a space they can get to where they can be out of the weather, if it's snowing, raining or blowing really hard, the need to have a little dog house or a little something with straw so they can bed down in there and keep themselves warm in that weather," said veterinarian Julie Young.

Veterinarians also said another thing most don't think about is making sure the water in your pet's dish doesn't freeze outside.

In Central Washington, the cold and dry weather dehydrates animals and fresh water is a big part of making sure they stay healthy.
