SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth will play its first home games of the 2013-14 men's basketball season this weekend as the Pirates host the Quality Inn Oakwood Classic on Friday and Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse. The Bucs will take on SUNY College at Old Westbury on Friday night, then Colorado College on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m.

Friday's game will be broadcast live on SWX cable channel in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. SWX can be found on channel 306 on both the Comcast and Time Warner cable systems, and channel 6-2 for digital box users.

Fellow NWC-member University of Puget Sound is the fourth team in the Classic and will be playing Colorado College on Friday and Old Westbury on Saturday with both of those games at 6:00 p.m.

The Pirates: Whitworth opened the season with a 71-53 win over Trinity University (Texas) last Friday night in a game played at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. The Bucs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and never trailed against the Tigers. Whitworth extended that lead to 14 points at halftime (38-24) and to 20 points (47-27) early in the second half.

It was a pair of freshmen who led the Pirates in scoring. Kenny Love had a game-high 15 points to go along with six assists and two steals. Christian Jurlina came off of the bench to add 12 points and share the team lead in rebounds with six. Taylor Farnsworth battled foul trouble, but still made all five of his field goals to finish with ten points. Adam Wilks, who substituted for Farnsworth, also had ten points in 20 minutes of play.

The Opponents: SUNY College at Old Westbury is a state school in New York with an enrollment of just over 3,000 on Long Island. The Panthers are coming off of a 25-4 season in 2012-13 in which they won the Skyline Conference with a 17-1 regular season record. But Old Westbury was upset in the Skyline playoffs and did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The Panthers competed in the ECAC Metro Region post-season tournament instead and won three games, taking the title with a 74-73 victory over Richard Stockton (N.J.).

Old Westbury is off to a 2-1 start during a five-game swing through the Northwest this week. The Panthers went 1-1 at the Bon Appetit Tip-Off Classic co-hosted by Linfield and Lewis & Clark. Old Westbury defeated Linfield 73-62 on Saturday, but fell 88-72 at Lewis & Clark on Sunday. The Panthers rebounded to win a highly competitive 83-80 decision at Whitman on Tuesday night. Old Westbury is led by preseason All-American senior forward Tyrik Tucker, who is averaging 24.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for far. He has gotten to the foul line an average of nine times per game. Sophomore guard AJ Alexander did not play in the opener, but has averaged 18.5 points per game in the last two contests. Junior forward PJ Page contributes 14.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Whitworth has never played Old Westbury.

Colorado College will be playing its 2013-14 season opener when the Tigers take on Puget Sound on Friday night. CC is picked second in the Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference poll this season (behind Trinity, Texas) after finishing second in 2012-13 with an overall record of 16-11 and an SCAC mark of 11-4.

The Tigers return four starters and most of the roster from last season. Leading the way is two-time All-SCAC point guard Ryan Milne, a senior who averaged 14.4 points and 4.6 assists per game a year ago. Junior forward Chris Lesnansky was also a First Team All-SCAC selection last season after averaging 15.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Whitworth's last meeting with Colorado College came during the 2010-11 season when the Pirates earned an 86-59 victory over the Tigers at a tournament in Las Vegas.
