Aviani Makes It Close But Portland Wins 6-4

The Spokane Chiefs came within a goal late in the 3rd period after getting itself into an early three-goal hole, but the Portland wouldn't give up the points at home in as the Winterhawks went on to win 6-4 on Friday.

The Chiefs gave up three first-period goals in quick succession with all of Portland's scores happening within a little over a 6-minute window.

Spokane's Connor Chartier scored early on in the second period, but the Winterhawks moved the lead back to three goals on a Brendan Leipsic goal only 31 seconds later. Riley Whittingham and Adam Helewka tacked on back-to-back goals later in the period for the Chiefs only to have Portland answer yet again right before the end of the period to force Spokane to face a 5-3 deficit before the start of the final frame.

Mike Aviani scored his 22nd goal of the season--and his WHL leading 3rd short-handed one--to give the Chiefs a glimmer of hope in the third period. Spokane were unable to score late, and with goalie Garrett Hughson pulled, Taylor Leier put it away for the Winterhawks to give them the 6-4 lead with only a few ticks left in the contest.

The Chief's Mitch Holmberg added to his WHL-lead in points with two assists. He now sits at 59 points on the season.

Spokane will host in-state rivals, the Tri-City Americans, tomorrow night, Nov. 23, at the Spokane Arena. The game will be televised live on SWX starting at 7:00 p.m.
