Whitworth Falls To Tigers In Oakwood Classic

by Whitworth University Sports Information

SPOKANE, Wash. – Ryan Milne made all four of his free throws in the final 16 seconds of the game to secure a 65-60 win for visiting Colorado College at 12th-ranked Whitworth on Saturday night in the conclusion of the Quality Inn Oakwood Classic.

Milne was named the tournament MVP after he totaled 18 points in this game and 43 for the tournament. The senior point guard added 11 assists over the two days.

The Tigers improved to 2-0 while the Pirates fell to 2-1.

Colorado College took a 37-29 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. The Tigers led 22-21 following a layup by Dustin McConnell. But CC then went on a 10-0 run to hand Whitworth its first double-digit deficit of the season. Justin Berardino and Ryan Milne hit back to back three-pointers in that run. The lead stretched to 37-24 and the Tigers had a chance to extend it, but the Pirates were able to score the final five points of the half to cut the lead to eight.

Whitworth managed to carve into the lead further in the second half, but never got closer than 48-45 after Adam Wilks scored inside. Colorado College answered with seven straight points to retake a 55-45 lead with 6:23 to play. Milne had five of those seven points.

The Pirates got within three points one final time after George Valle made two free throws to make the score 61-58 with 17 seconds to go. But Milne sandwiched his four three throws around a basket by Pirate point guard Kenny Love to keep his team on top.

Chris Lesnansky led the Tigers with 21 points and he was also named to the All-Tournament team. Milne had four assists and three steals to go along with his 18 points. Mitch Carter led all players with 10 rebounds, helping Colorado College finish with a 38-30 edge on the boards.

Whitworth struggled to its worst shooting performance since late in the 2011-12 season. The Pirates made only 36.2% of their shots (21-58), their lowest total since making only 33.9% in a win over Trinity (Texas) on March 3, 2012 in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Likewise, the Pirates only made 21.7% (5-23) from three-point range, their lowest percentage from beyond the arc since January 13, 2012 in a win over Pacific (Ore.).

Valle finished with a game-high 23 points for the Pirates, while Colton McCargar added 13 points.

Whitworth will look to return the favor to Colorado College, traveling to compete in the Tigers’ tournament next weekend in Colorado Springs. The Pirates will play Carleton College (Minn.) on Saturday and then take on the hosts on Sunday.

Game 1 – Old Westbury 82, Puget Sound 81

Al Alexander scored the eventual game-winning basket with 2:40 to play and SUNY College at Old Westbury (3-2) held Puget Sound scoreless over the final 2:15 to grab an 82-81 win in the early game at the Quality Inn Oakwood Classic on Saturday night.

UPS (2-3) took its largest lead at 50-43 on Nick Holden’s layup with 17:45 to play. But the Panthers rallied to go up 62-58 on Floyd LeRoy’s three-pointer with just over ten minutes to play. The Loggers outscored Old Westbury 16-7 over the next four minutes, grabbing a 74-69 lead on Kohl Meyer’s basket.

Still trailing 76-71 with 6:37 to go, the Panthers outscored the Loggers 11-5 the rest of the way. Alexander scored to tie the game 80-80 with 3:15 to go and then the game winner at 2:40 to play. The final point of the game was Rex Nelson’s free throw for UPS with 2:16 to go. The Loggers had five shots in the final two minutes, but could not get one to go in.

Ray Parker led Old Westbury with 24 points and Tyrik Tucker added 23. AJ Maw had 19 points for Puget Sound, while Nelson finished with 16. Both Tucker and Nelson were named to the All-Tournament team.
