Sunnyside School Board Named School Board of the Year
In addition to its recent selection as a 2013 School Board of Distinction, the Sunnyside School District Board of Directors has been named a School Board of the Year.
SUNNYSIDE, WA - In addition to its recent selection as a 2013 School Board of Distinction, the Sunnyside School District Board of Directors has been named a School Board of the Year.
The Washington State School Directors' Association selected two districts over the weekend for the top honor. Sunnyside was selected for districts with less than 9,000 students, and South Kitsap was selected for districts with over 9,000 students.
This is the second time the SSD school board has earned the award. It was previously named WSSDA's School Board of the Year back in 2008. It also earned the School Board of Distinction honors in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
The WSSDA selection committee says it applauds the school district and its board of directors for the remarkable success its schools have seen in recent years, noting the rise in graduation rate from 41% in 2007 to 85% in 2013.
"This recognition is a result of the incredible student success that all of our district's staff and volunteers have made possible," said Rocky Simmons, SSD school board president. "They are the ones who are making our vision a reality. Because of their talent and commitment, more students are succeeding at higher levels than ever before. This award shapes our community and showcases how we care and support in our commitment to high level expectations in education for all."
"Our board has set an uncompromising vision of success for all students that our staff has embraced and used as a guide to develop and implement a system of continuous improvement that has made this level of success possible," said SSD Superintendent Dr. Richard D. Cole. "We are fortunate to have a board who supports and advocates for the belief that all students are capable of succeeding and that all staff are active in their journey to success."
